The Recap

Like when I ran my 350 miler last year or my solo running of the 202 Mile American Odyssey Relay a few years ago, I know eventually I have to sit down and try to put on proverbial paper what the event was like for me.  To say it is harder than the actual physical endeavor would be flip but sometimes it feels not that far off.
 
I sit here trying to put together the pieces of what happened over the three days of running the 160+ miles from Dane, Wisconsin to Davenport, IA and the memories come back in floods. What to include and what to exclude. The best way I know how to break down these excursions is the way I have done in the past: Day by Day.  So, let’s start with a week beforehand. 

Actually, let’s go to April. What? Stay with me.

I was supposed to race the Peterson Ridge Rumble in April in Sisters, OR. Not my sort of race per se (trail) but a good way to get a relatively challenging 20 miler in the mountains under my belt. Then, out of nowhere, a staph infection nailed my foot. Without going into details, a very bad case of MRSA decided it wanted to interrupt my entire year and put me a toothpicks-width away from going to the hospital. While I am very grateful to my fantastic doctor who took care of me and the good luck I had, I was more than a little perturbed at how this setback not only continues to bother my foot to this day but how the time off put into jeopardy all I was doing. Like my proposed Dane to Davenport.

Growing up with a slightly odd name and an insatiable curiosity (and the scientifically proven fact that humans like nothing more than the sound of their own name) I was fascinated with the fact there was a town named Dane. I knew I would eventually find my way to the town but for what exactly and when were two unknowns. Finally I figured out those last two variables. All was set.

Then I got an email from Ecuador.


Usually those types of stories revolve around royalty in Africa asking me to be a tax shelter for $10 million for just a small fee of $5,000. However, this was different. I was being asked to be the keynote speaker at a conference in front of people from all walks of the fitness world.  My talk was to center around my experiences and how fitness means nothing without nutrition. Then, after that, I could finally return to the US to ready myself for my run. If I made it, that is.

You see, I landed in Ecuador after an entire day of traveling on Thursday, September 12th. I returned after another entire day of traveling, leaving Ecuador at 5 a.m. and landing in Portland at 11 p.m. on Sunday the 15th. Six hours later I had to be back at the airport fly to Moline, IL. That would leave me one day (Tuesday) to make the three hour drive to the greater Madison area and allow me and my crew (Shannon) to get last minute supplies. This was already quite the trip and I had not even begun running.

But that is what my running has become and I gladly do it as such. Do I still wish to run fast times and push myself? Absolutely. Denying that would be farcical. However, I know I have worked hard for a platform that allows me the opportunity to try and make a difference in other people’s lives. Running 50 plus miles a day for three days in and of itself is not “that” hard. Heck, I did it for seven straight days last year. Yet, making sure I was at specific places, at specific times, in order to give speeches to motivate others to push their own boundaries- that is something completely difficult. Then, to finish the whole thing with a marathon, one where I would put all I had into it and not just jog to the finish line, well, that adds something to the task I didn’t even have last year when I ran 350 miles in a week.

The oddity of starting a race in one place and ending it in another is those two places will be where you spend the least amount of time. With my adventure starting in Dane early in the morning and immediately leaving this small town, I knew I would see very little of it.  So I was glad to make a quick trip around the hamlet the day before, snapping pictures of the town which shared my name and giggling at all the ways in which I could have fun with all the signs. I cannot say I have a personal favorite but if the Dane Manufacturing sign ever disappears there is a pretty good chance it could be located in my loft in Portland.

A few months prior to coming to the greater Madison area to begin this feat, I went to book hotels online. For reasons still unknown to me, hotels in the area were sold out far and wide. This added an even greater problem. Finally, I settled for a hotel about 20 miles away from Dane. I knew that after finishing the first day of running I had to be back in Madison for my talk at the Dream Bank but would have to get presentable first. This meant I had to drive past Madison to the motel where we would stay, shower, and go back to Madison again. Le sigh.

The hotel wasn’t bad. But it wasn’t good. It also wasn’t a hotel. It was a motel. With almost no parking. And a packed house. Even sleeping wasn’t going to be easy apparently.

Then it started to rain. Hard. Oh well. 

Day One:

When we woke up at the ungodly hour of  “I don’t even want to recall” O’clock the rain had slowed a bit. While it was going to be a bit of a pain to get back to this motel for the reasons described above, at the very least my crew (again, this consisted of one person: Shannon) and I would not have to pack up all our gear and fit it in the vehicle. This was just about getting over to Dane, firing the imaginary pistol, and getting underway.


It was dark.

This day would require the most amount of runner-wranglin’. The vast majority of the rest of the run was seemingly going to be much easier, at least when it came to me being able to find where I was supposed to run. However, for the first part of this day, there would be a few twists and turns at least. Luckily most of them wouldn’t start until the sun came up. If it came up.

The rain abated by the time we started and the temperature was comfortable for running. Some runners who mentioned they might be able to join us for the race dropped messages to say that traffic was going to keep them from getting to my appointed places at the appropriate times. I didn’t mind not having the company as I often feel that trading some potential boredom for trying to entertain (which is what I do when I am lucky enough to have company) is fine for a 12 miler. Not so much for the next three days. It might actually be better to be alone with my thoughts, running at my own pace.

The cloudiness burned off after about three hours and the temperatures climbed. I was really hoping to avoid any heat on the first day but I was doing a good job of staying hydrated. Then around mile 20 or so my crew came back to me.

“There’s a bridge out.”

Wonderful.  I cannot even imagine trying to do one of these type of runs in unfamiliar territory prior to the invention of cellphones and GPS. Before all too long, we had found a suitable alternative to the original planned route. It had virtually no shoulder to run on, was a tad bit longer in length, and would now probably have all the detoured cars racing down it, but it was a working road. First semi-disaster averted.

After a little break to take in some calories (I have a very hard time taking in any calories while I am moving. It always serves me best to take breaks while running, to sit and ingest, and then run again.) I was ready for the second part of the day. The weather would be mostly cooperative as I began what would be a run on the Jane Addams Trail. Well, that was the plan.

After leaving my crew at one junction I entered a little corridor in the woods where the trail slid downward and the walls became sheer and high on both sides. The temperature dropped five degrees easily. It felt like a horror movie. As I turned the corner the gaping maw of a black hole appeared in front of me in the form of a tunnel. In July I ran a marathon that has a 2.25 mile long tunnel wherein you can see the light at the other end. Here, there was no light. How long was this tunnel?!

It being 2:30 in the afternoon, I had not thought to bring a headlamp. Why would I? So I ventured into the tunnel and tried to use my flashlight function on the phone. But even after my eyes adjusted I could see virtually nothing. Not too easily spooked, I nonetheless decided to venture no further. I knew not what was in the tunnel, how long it was, and my crew didn’t know I was running through it. So I turned around and had to run about half a mile back or more until I got cell reception. I called my crew and once again we had to reroute.

It turns out the tunnel is only 400 yards long and the reason I couldn’t see any light was because of a right angle turn at the end. Nonetheless I made the right decision. Getting mauled by a startled bear would have put a crimp in my plans.


The rest of the run was rather uneventful. Well, relatively speaking (I have to save some details for a chapter in some book you actually have to pay for to read.) I finished right around the planned time so all I had to hope for was good traffic on the roads from Monroe back to Sun Prairie where our motel was. Then good traffic back down to Madison for my presentation at Dream Bank and everything would be set.

Getting to Dream Bank and presenting to those in attendance was exactly what I had been hoping to do. A great and enthusiastic crowd accompanied me as I tried to be exuberant while shaking out leg cramps and tiredness. Before too long it was time to head back to the hotel and try to catch forty winks. Or given the early wake-up call perhaps 20-25 winks at best.

Day Two:

The second day of running presented no major challenges at all when it comes to logistics or bridges being out or anything of that sort. In fact, after a few hours of running I was joined by two runners from Freeport, IL where I would be speaking to children at an elementary school later. Brian and Steve would be running their first marathon in just a few days but came out to do some morning miles with me. We chatted while running and the miles flew by.  Before long they had to get back to their actual lives and I was alone again. Then apparently the sun erupted.

I was able to finish off my first portion of the morning before 11 a.m. and I was lucky. Needing to be at the school at noon was a blessing as the temperatures soared to 93 degrees. Speaking to children always invigorates me. They bring out my best and don’t have presumptuous questions that are really about themselves and their own failings. Their curiosities and wonder have not yet be quashed, or at least if it has, I hope I have jump started it with talking to them.

I keep my speeches short and sweet because I would rather listen to what they have to say and ask rather than talk to them. Do my speeches get a little on the after-school-special, just-say-no-to-drugs, stay-in-school, kind? Probably. But they need to hear that.

After the speech, we made the executive decision to make the drive to the next hotel and unpack there before driving back and continuing.  Hopefully by missing a few hours of direct overhead sunshine, the toll the run would take on me would be less. Since we had nothing we had to get to that night, running later in the day was not a problem. However, even when I started around 3 pm or so, the temperature had hardly dropped. I was not a happy camper.

For the next few hours I slogged on the best I could. I was now on the Great River Trail and while it provided a relatively easy line to follow, here and there it would just sort of disappear. I assumed the worn track that appeared to go through some people’s private property was some sort of easement (hey, look!  My law school education just popped up!) that allowed the path to go through but I wasn’t sure.  So, at times, I would venture out onto the side of the road for a mile here or there.

Then suddenly the skies clouded (good), temperature went down (good) and rain and wind and hail began (bad.) The last hour or so of running was done in conditions that I knew were far from ideal for me to be running in. The kicker and final straw was when a sizable branch was blown off a tree and hit me in the face.  It did not cause any damage to which I am eternally grateful I was wearing my Julbo sunglasses. The lenses on the glasses and not in my eyeball received the scratching and I was eternally happy about that. Any thoughts of continuing and getting a few more miles in the bank prior to stopping were now done. I would simply have just as long a day of running on day three as I did today.

Day Three:

This day of running was about as straightforward as one can get. I once again got on the Great River Trail and headed south. Every three miles my crew would be waiting to towel me off and hydrate me. The temperature was far better than the previous day but still warm and humid.

The morning slipped by with little to no change in pace with no events to speak of. While running along the Mississippi was wonderful as were traversing the tiny towns situated alongside it, I was ready to be done. We ran through the town of Cordova, all 600 people strong of it, and I was taken aback by this little exercise station situated right facing the river. I hadn’t brought my camera with me and haven’t been able to find a shot of it online but it was wonderful. There appeared to be at least 6 different workout machines placed on a little paved section you off of Main Street. In matching colors and evidently either brand new or well take care of, I thought how marvelous it was that this tiny town was promoting health and exercise. My schedule 3-mile stop was on the other side of town and I told my crew about this.

As I got under way I thought I heard my name and turned around. Sure enough, a woman was running with my crew.  I stop and turned around to make sure everything was OK.  As it turns out the woman knew about my run and just happened to see me running by her house. The town of Cordova was supposedly going to be out to greet me along the way but thought I would be coming by later in the afternoon. I told her that I unfortunately had a date with the Mayor in Davenport around 5 p.m. and I couldn’t keep him waiting. It was all extremely flattering but was also a bummer. I would have loved to have seen the residents of the town and spoken to them. But such is the nature of events like this.

I am guessing the town, just 23 miles away from where I would finish, was guilty of thinking it wouldn’t take long to get to Davenport. Their thinking might have been I would easily be in Cordova and Davenport all within just a few minutes of each other. I have actually encountered this thought-process previously. Unfortunately, I am not a car and those last 23 miles are going to take about four hours. But believe me, just knowing people were watching pepped my step.

With about 13 or so miles to go I saw a runner on the path coming toward me. Giving the absolute lack of anyone I had randomly seen on the course over the previous 150 miles this was a welcome sight.  Even better when the runner stopped, introduced himself and told me he was going to be running with me the rest of the way! Mike was his name and his company was extremely welcome. Mike provided not only some excellent running company (he is an accomplished ultra-runner himself) but also some tidbits and stories about the areas we were running through. He had run them often himself and was a great tour guide. This also allowed my crew to breathe deeply for a bit as I no longer had to wonder where exactly I would be running. Taking the mental “which way do I go?” out of the task allowed me to focus on the final few miles.

As we got closer to Davenport I could see I wasn’t going to make it around 5 p.m. as planned. I hoped the Mayor wouldn’t mind waiting a bit but if he did, well, there was little I could do. I was joined for the last few miles by one of the assistants to the race director of the Quad Cities Marathon, James. Keeping everyone apprised of my whereabouts via phone and running alongside Mike, James gave me two people to follow. As the path twisted and turned through Moline, IL and headed toward the Centennial Bridge, I went inward in my mind.

All I needed to do was cross the bridge, do a little loop and I would be greeted by a three-piece jazz band, the Mayor, the media and some great friends and fans. It would be a finish line. But it wouldn’t really be. Thirty-six hours later I would have to run a marathon. So, even though it was the end of one task, it was the beginning of another. I realized what a perfect metaphor for life that really is.
 

For my efforts, the Mayor of Davenport presented me with a wonderful honor. It has been rumored I would get the key to the city of Davenport but instead received the Pacem in Terris Award. Given “to honor a person for their achievements in peace and justice, not only in their country but in the world” the award was a huge surprise. I try to do what I can to help make the world better and know that I am very fallible. But when someone feels you deserve something based on your actions, it is not your position to tell them they are incorrect in what they think. So I graciously accepted the wonderful honor and did what I could to not topple over while the Mayor read the inscription.

You see, I was tired.

The unsung heroes behind this award and my running of the miles before I even got to Davenport are definitely the people of the Quad Cities Marathon. They agreed to be part of this adventure and to help make it happen from start to finish. To them I thank greatly.

But without a doubt, as in any long-distance running adventure, it is not the runner who really has to do the hardest work: it is his crew. In this case my best friend Shannon made it possible for me to take on these distances. I knew she would find ways around downed bridges, and dark tunnels and make sure the fluids I need and the food I craved would be with me whenever I wanted. Sacrificing a week of her own time with her first 100 miler looming was a huge thing for her to do.  On a smaller scale but just as important, each day she would make sure she was exactly where I needed her to be, exactly when I needed her to be there. I cannot think of anyone I would rather usher me through blisters, chafing, dehydration and hallucinations.


Which leaves me done with this endeavor. (Well, ignoring the fact that I raced a marathon the next day.  Read that recap here.)What is the start of the next? Right now, I am unsure. I have a feeling I will be taking a break from long excursions over many states for a little while. I flat-out canceled an idea I had about a very long run in the Texas for the time being. It is still there and maybe someday it, and other adventures will be things I am writing about.  As for now, I’d like to recover, continue to heal my foot, and be happy I made it through another trek.

Final Day of Dane to Davenport

The third day of my Dane to Davenport is going to be very refreshing. Well, it is going to be as refreshing as running my 3rd day of 50+ miles can be, that is.

Why will I think it will even be remotely refreshing? Because it will be the end of 150+ miles of running, for one. Three days of seeing a beautiful part of this country which sometimes gets overshadowed by the wonderful mountains ranges of the West, the beaches of the coasts and the forests all over, is going to be a treat. Then, I get to rest. Until Sunday. When I run the Quad Cities Marathon.

As I travel through Illinois for all but the last mile or so of this run, I will be passing alongside the mighty Mississip. Iowa will be on my right and my feet will be on the Great River Trail.  The weather seems to be at least moderately cooperating with no tornadoes and no heat waves. Let's just hope it keeps that way.

In addition, I will have completed something which is not necessarily the most physically challenging event  I have completed but since, as of today, I have spent three of the past five days almost exclusively on planes, I am hardly in the best physical or mental shape to tackle it.

But when I cross the finish in front of the Modern Woodman Park, I will breather a big sigh of relief.  Until about 36 hours later when I run the marathon.  My goal for that race? Well, if I can beat my time from 2006 (3:12:25) I would be elated. However, toeing the line in one piece will be the main goal. Enjoying the wonderful race that Joe Moreno and his fantastic group of people put on for the people here in the area will be the icing in the cake.

Besides, no one who likes me cares what my time will be and no one who doesn't will be impressed by anything I do. Once you learn the simple truth of that sort of thing in life, you really do have a mastery of the world.

Day Two Proposed Route

The Second Day of Dane to Davenport has me running from just south of Monroe, WI to just north of Clinton, IA via the Land of Lincoln. While I have been planning this run for quite some time, like many of my other trips they are usually just skeletal ideas until I am fairly certain they are a go.  Then, I get intimate with the details.  Often, my plans are shaped by fortuitous meetings with others. The second day of this run was shaped by just such circumstances.

Last year, mentioning my plans to potential run through the heartland some running compatriots mentioned that my proposed route went fairly close to their own stomping grounds. They suggested some trails I could run on which fit one of my main needs: safe passage. Even more so, one of their friends just so happened to work at a school which met another need: reaching out to youth to hopefully inspire then to chase their own dreams.

And just like that I had half of my route planned for the day, a mid-day stopping point, and some running partners. Joining me for some of the day are Brian and Steve, who will both be tackling their first marathon the same weekend I will be ending my journey at the Quad Cities Marathon.   Furthermore, once I finish talking to the children in Freeport, IL, my endeavor will be halfway done.

Well, not counting the marathon I am going to run at the end, but one thing at a time.

BodyGlide OnBoard

As anyone who knows me as as runner can attest, I sweat a lot.  Not like "Wow. you are sweaty!" but more like "Are you currently standing under a shower head I cannot see?"  It is a source of consternation for a variety of things such as proper hydration, clothing that needs to be chosen to properly wick away as best as possible the rivulets of sweats running on me, and, of course, chafing.

I have been working with BodyGlide because of this problem for many years.  When I forget to put the BodyGlide on our in enough amounts I have disastrous results. Case in point was the Boise 70.3 two years ago.  I had chafing that was the equivalent to 2nd degree burns or worse.  It went from painful to actually dangerous. 

When I do long distance runs like my 350 miler or this Dane to Davenport, being properly protected is essential to the race. Because of the stage racing over several days it is not as if I can just power through abrasions for one day and rest up in pain from there on out.  I have to be ready to go each day, with as little problems from chafing as possible.

As such, it is with great pleasure that I note that BodyGlide is fully behind my Dane to Davenport and keeping my skin as fresh and dry as a Daisy. Well, as dry as possible consider I am the Sweatanator. 

I am currently in Ecuador this very minute working on a speech regarding hydration and proper fueling for a race, I was put through a sweat test.  In 45 minutes of running at a 7 minute pace on a treadmill, those testing me were astounded to see that I had lost, at least, 7 pounds through sweat. I tried to tell them but they didn't believe it.  I think they will now.

Day One: Dane to Monroe

The proposed route for my first day of Dane to Davenport will have me running just shy of 52 straight miles.  Because of logistics (and for some reason a completely booked downtown Madison, WI) I will have to finish my 52 miles of running, then drive half an hour north of Madison to grab a shower before I can drive back to Madison to go to my speech at Dream Bank.

The best part about this first day is that I get to run straight for 52 miles. I do not have to break it up with a speech in between or an obligation other than running.  The worst part is that I will be up at dawn to drive from my hotel to Dane (that never gets less weird to say or type) to start the running.

Unlike my 350 miler last year, a few more navigational problems could present themselves.  For virtually all of the Pacific Coast 350 I was on one road heading due north.  Here, I will be make a few turns, a couple of jaunts through parks and then some trail running next to the roads. As was the same with my 52 Marathons in 52 weekends, my 202 solo running of the American Odyssey Relay and last year's 350 miler, the actual physical endeavor is tough but not nearly as tough as the logistics.

The extended  forecast calls for decent temperatures (60s and 70s) but scattered thunderstorms.  I could do without the light show but one must make do with what they are given. I am sure, whatever the weather condition, I have run in it.

One week from today I will be done with the first leg.

One Week to Go

Give or take.

After taking on and setting a new personal best at the Mt. Nebo Half Marathon this past weekend, I have quite a doozy of a schedule coming up before I even get to set foot in Dane, Wisconsin to start my journey.

On Thursday I have to be at the Portland Airport for an entire day of flying to Guayaquil, Ecuador to take part in a seminar on health and wellness. Then I will fly back on Sunday arriving home around 11 p.m.  That is just a mere seven hours before I have to be back at the same airport to fly to Moline, IL.  After one day in the Quad Cities, it is off to the greater Madison area before I start my journey.  A journey that is now longer than I originally thought.

What was supposed to be around 150 miles is now going to be closer to 165 miles once all things are said and done.  Some route changes to avoid congestion and to alleviate the need to run through semi-dangerous traffic areas has added a few miles to the overall trip. I guess that just adds to the adventure, huh?

Fortunately, I should be accompanied for most of the run by runners from the three states I will be visiting for a vast majority of the run.  Nothing makes a run go faster than sharing it with fellow runners. Knowing I will be given the opportunity to reach out to young minds along the way, as well as others who might be a bit more set in their ways, makes it all the better.

The long-term forecast looks like it could call for a touch of rain along the way but I doubt it will be as bad as the sideways 40 mph stuff that hit me during my 350 miler last year! Regardless, there is a run to be done and a goal to accomplish.  It is so close now I can just taste it!

Fortunately, no matter what happens, the same wonderful crew I had for my 350 miler will be with me for this run.  That crew consists of my best friend- Shannon. I am not worried at all about anything that doesn't involve running because I know she will see to it I make it all the way to the Quad Cities.  She has to - she is running the marathon as well!

Welcoming Julbo - Sponsoring my Eyeballs

I have been working with Julbo in many different capacities for a few years now. Too have them back my endeavor from Dane to Davenport is even more wonderful.

I recently wrote a review of a great many of their sunglasses here. In fact,I have had more than a few people mention I seem to always have sunglasses on. Granted, I am not Jack Nicholson cool enough to wear sunglasses indoors but I do indeed find myself covering my eyes as much as possible.  I remember when I failed my first eye exam.  Hated it.  Felt like I was a failure. Like my eyes were imperfect and there was nothing I could do about it. Well, lo and behold ways to fix your eyes came around and in 2005 I got LASIK.

First off, I can't believe it has been 8.5 years since I got the surgery. That is just weird. Second, when people asked me if I could tell the difference the most important thing I could tell them was I could see the clock when I woke up in the middle of the night.  Second, opening my eyes in a ppool and not losing a contact was a wonderful thing to do as well.

What does this have to with Julbo? Well, with vision corrected to 20/10 I protect my eyes as much as I can. I don't wear sunscreen as much as I should and my diet could be a little better (lean beef is about my only saving graces some times) but I will be darned if I am not going to do what I can to keep my peepers protected. And if they are stylishly protected, well then that is even better.

So, if you don't see much of my eyes during the Dane to Davenport it is because they will be covered along the way. When we are safely out of harm's way I will let you stare into them dreamily.

But stand in line and don't shove.

When in Davenport...

One of the many reason I chose to run my Dane to Davenport was to have it be involved with one of the most top-notch marathon weekend events out there - the Quad Cities Marathon. I can't sing the praises enough of not only the cities that are involved with this race, but is event organizer, Joe Moreno and all the people who go unnamed but make the entire weekend a smash success. It was at the Quad Cities Marathon back in 2006 when Joe asked me to make an impromptu speech about the 52 Marathon I was running that year.  I had nothing prepared, didn't really think I deserved the honor but got up and did so anyway.  To say I was honored would be an massive understatement.

I joined the Quad Cities Marathon again in 2010 where I helped unofficially pace the 1:35 half marathon group. Bruised battered and beaten from doing the Warrior Challenge in Maui the week before (a 5k, one mile and marathon all in 24 hours) my spirits were buoyed by the fact that I had something even more to do after the race.

 Pammy's Team named after a Moline runner and cyclist who died earlier that year following a three-year battle with colon cancer. Pammy's Team is comprised of all Ironman finishers who each took turn pushing a developmentally challenged child through one of the various portions of the Quad Cities Marathon.  With five legs each and two teams, 10 children got to experience at least one leg of the course in special racing wheelchairs pushed by various finishers of Ironmans across the country.

I got to meet Alyssa, a precocious little 5 year old who my friend and local massage therapist, Laurel Darren had pushed earlier in the race. Alyssa took a shine to me and I got to be so honored to be the one who got to carry her across the finishline later in the day.  You can see Alyssa, wearing the Disney Hat Laurel herself wore in a marathon and being all smiles (and a little bit of chocolate on her hands and cheek) in the picture to the right.

This year, as I am again the featured speaker at this fantastic race I know I will be elated to have finished my 165 mile journey and will have many more stories to share.  One of them will probably be how I cannot possibly believe that I thought it was a good idea to race 26.2 miles the day after completing a 150 mile stage run. 6 Weeks Out - Adding Challenges

Hard to believe it is August already which means my little jaunt through the midwest is just next month. When I originally planned this adventure, I felt it would be challenging but doable.  Then I got a bad case of staph infection in my foot (MRSA) and wasn't sure when or if I would be running for the rest of the year.

I have been extremely fortunate to have had excellent care take of me and am feeling as spry as i have felt in years.  The foot is far from healed (signs of the staph keep rearing its ugly head) but it hasn't stopped me from slowly but surely getting the miles up again.

An opportunity to present as the keynote speaker at the GSSI (Gatorade Sport Science Institute) in Ecuador arose a few weeks ago. I would be presenting about some of the running I have done, how I have tackled challenges and why nutrition pays such a huge roll in those endeavors. I jumped at the opportunity and began the planning.  Then I noticed that I will be getting back around 11 p.m. on a Sunday.  I leave to start the Dane to Davenport around 6 a.m. the next day. So after being out of the country for a few days, I have approximately 4 hours to get my stuff together and go take on the D2D.

I won't say I wouldn't have it any other way as that would be a lie. But I do like the fact that given what I have put behind me in my past that I know lots of long flights preceding a 165 mile stage run which precedes a speech at the Quad Cities Marathon which preceded what will be my 146th lifetime marathon is something I can handle.

That's the difference between confidence and being cocky.  Knowing what you can do based on past experiences is simply acknowledging that you are able to put your best foot forward because something in your past shows you will probably succeed. The unknown portions are what make it exciting.

Second Stop: Freeport, IL

The first day of the Dane to Davenport is going to be hectic. With my speech at DreamBank at the end of the day but not particularly late in the evening, I am going to have to complete all 50+ miles then race back to Madison to talk.  However, my second day should be more relaxed with my talk coming in the middle of the day as I run pass Freeport, Illinois.

When I discussed the possibility of this adventure almost a year ago, I so happened to be talking with some runners who lived along the route. They proposed to not only run along with me for portions of the run but thought that a school they had connections with would be a perfect venue for my second day speech. So, as things just sometimes happen, the next thing I know I was scheduled to speak at an elementary school in Freeport, IL.

I love talking to kids. Somewhere around in our mid 20s we hear things that can be inspiring but instead make us think of the things we have not completed that we wanted to do. While many are still driven to then achieve their own dreams, others need to buttress their own perceived failures by tearing down the accomplishments of others. Children, on the other hand, hear about amazing things and it simply fuels their fire to do what they want to do, regardless of any connection the amazing thing they heard has to the amazing thing they wish to do.

As I leave the Jane Addams Trail just a few miles north of Freeport, I will be about halfway done with my journey. But I hope talking to these kids will be the first step for their own adventure planning.

First Stop: DreamBank

When researching the proposed route for my Dane to Davenport, I came upon a very interesting place that I will pass in Madison, Wisconsin. It is called DreamBank and it is owned by American Family Insurance. Let me quote from their website to explain what Dreambank is all about:

"DreamBank is a place for dreamers to come together to help build successful and sustainable communities. We believe in the power of individual dreams – those ideas and passions that enrich our personal lives – to be used for positive change in our families and our communities."

To say I was dumbstruck by something which basically embodies everything about my passions, let alone this specific journey, would be an understatement. Before long I was on the horn with the wonderful people at DreamBank.  They were as excited as I was to be speaking to one another. As such, my first stop on my trip from Dane to Davenport will be at this innovative community that is making the most of every day.

On Wednesday evening, Sept. 18th, after having run 50+ miles, I will hightail it back to Madison to inspire others to plan out their own dreams, catch them, hogtie them and move onto more dreams. I might be a little more eloquent than that but then again, I will have just 50 miles.

Kick Off Party

Last week, the Quad Cities Marathon held a kick-off party to thank all the people involved with putting the race together and get its runners excited to be part of the 16th annual race weekend. I was honored to be asked to attend and unveiled my Dane to Davenport run for the first time.

At this event, the mayors of the Quad Cities (including race director Joe Moreno, a mayor once himself and one any city would be glad to have representing them) were in attendance. They acknowledged how
wonderful the event's past is and how glorious its future will be.  They also noted how the recent events at Boston only made the running community more resolved to rise up and show how marathons unite people and cities.

I had the opportunity to meet with some runners who had run every single rendition of the Quad Cities Marathon: so-called "streakers". While there are a few races I do like to run more than once (obviously QCM is one) I am always intrigued by what makes these runners tick.  Why do they return to the same race again and again to test their legs when there are so many races around the country to run?

When I told those in attendance of my plans to run from Dane to Davenport, there were lots of cheers.  I am not thinking those cheers were for my endeavor only but rather for how I plan to use what I do well to encourage others to find their own talents.  In addition, runners can relate to the struggle of mile after mile, regardless of the pace.  They may not be able to do 55 miles a day but they remember when they did their own jump from three miles to five. They recall going for a run that once was thought to be impossible.  They were, in part, cheering for themselves.

I like that.

Dane to Davenport

When I finished the Pacific Coast 350 last year, I was almost immediately struck with the idea  to reach out and do something similar but in a different part of the country. I wanted to be able to speak to even more children about pursuing their dreams, ignoring the impossible and doing what I can to help fight the obesity epidemic in America.

One of the truly fun things about being one of the many runners who has traversed great distances on foot is being able to look at a map and think: "Yeah, I can run there from here." Having been given a rather unique name, I have know about the existence of Dane,Wisconsin for quite some time.  But how I would go about incorporating it into some sort of run to be more than just something to say I had either been there or run from there was another question.

That's where the Quad Cities Marathon comes in.  Having intimately worked with the race on numerous occasions, I am always looking for a reason to go back. Now I have it.

So from September 18th-20th, I will run approximately 165 miles from Dane, WI to Davenport, IA, stopping along the way to speak to schoolchildren, organizations and runners. I hope to make them think about what they feel are their limitations and then throwing any of those ideas out the door. While I have run further than this without stopping, I knew a one shot deal would not create the same opportunities to meet with as many people as possible.

As such, I devised the plan to do 55 miles a day for three straight days, ending at the Quad Cities (Davenport) on race weekend. Each day of running will contain at least one special stop somewhere along the route to spread my message. After finishing the run and presenting at both the expo and the pre-race dinner, I will take part in the race on Sunday, capping off a run across one of the more beautiful portions of mid-western America.

All told, it will be another opportunity for me to personally be inspired by this country and its inhabitants, all while I hope to do the same for those I meet and come across.
